About me
About me
I'm Lena.
I'm from Belgrade, but I have lived in London for 12 years now. With my English husband, I am raising two bilingual Serbian/English children (at the time this text emerged – February 2024 – they are five and two years old).
As a mum who identifies as Serbian and nourishes ties with family and friends back home, I am committed to passing on the language, values and cultural identity that I grew up with. We are raising not just bilinguals, but also biculturals and biliterates.
This blog emerged back in 2020, when our daughter was starting to talk and I became absorbed by bilingualism. I started writing down and sharing our bilingual experiences: good bits, challenges and what we’ve learnt through experience and literature.
Through the content I create, I want to contribute to raising awareness of bilingualism and to show people who care about preserving their language and identity that they are not alone.
Raising bilingual children is a beautiful and rewarding experience, but it can be quite emotional, hard and lonely. It is a long-term journey, with lots of different phases that change quickly and sometimes unexpectedly. Not long ago we were at the beginning, working hard to give our older child a solid bilingual start. Fast forward, she is now in school and I am trying to find ways to maintain and preserve her Serbian, while at the same time starting from scratch with her younger brother.
The experience of each bilingual family is unique. Regardless, I believe that through honest conversation about our experiences, we can help each other and learn from each other. The more numerous, the stronger we are.
Bilingualism however, is not the only topic I write about. In here, you will also find texts about my experiences of motherhood and life away from my home country.
I hold an MA in English Language and Literature from Faculty of Philology in Belgrade and an MA in Communication Management at London Metropolitan University. My career so far has included: Teaching English language; translating - written, consecutive and simultaneous; and events organisation/management.
At the moment I work flexibly, mostly translating. When my kids are in school/at nursery or when they sleep, I work. This type of work enables me to maximise time with them now, when they are still very young.
I hope some of my words will resonate with you. If you have any questions or if you would like to share your bilingual experience, get in touch! I look forward to meeting you!
Welcome!
